The Lost Sheep — Bible Story

Luke 15:3-7

The shepherd leaves ninety-nine sheep to find the one that was lost.

Jesus told of a shepherd who knew each sheep by name. A hundred sheep in all — even one alone was worth the whole flock. One evening he counted: ninety-nine. One was missing. Where could it be? In the ravine? Caught in the brush? The shepherd did not calculate "I still have plenty." He left the ninety-nine and went.

He searched by night, by day, calling softly, listening for weak steps. When he found it, he did not scold — he put it on his shoulders and walked home humming. Shepherds did that: carry the tired one to calm it. He arrived home and invited the neighbors: "Rejoice with me!"

The religious leaders around Jesus criticized him for eating with "sinners." This parable was his answer: God rejoices more over one who returns than he is bothered by those who never left. In heaven, Jesus says, celebration breaks out when one heart repents.

The lost sheep did not "deserve" less than the ninety-nine safe ones. No one is disposable in the eyes of the One who leaves everything to find just one.

Reflection

Have you ever felt like the sheep that lost the path — or like the older brother who thinks it unfair to celebrate so much the one who fell? God does not tally who is worth the effort. If you have drifted away, know: someone is searching. If you are safe in the flock, remember: seeking the lost is your calling too. God's joy is not exclusive — it invites everyone to the same table.
