Esther Saves Her People — Bible Story

Esther 4–8

A brave queen intercedes and saves the Jews from destruction.

Esther was Jewish, an orphan raised by Mordecai, chosen to be queen in Persia — hiding who she was to survive. Haman, powerful and vain, plotted to destroy the whole Jewish people. Decrees were signed. Whole cities would wake one day no longer knowing Israel's children. Mordecai tore his clothes and sent word: "Who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?"

Esther trembled. To approach the king uninvited was death. Three days of fasting — she, her maids, the whole people praying in silence. Then she decided: "If I perish, I perish." She dressed herself. Entered the courtyard. The king extended the scepter. She invited the king and Haman to a banquet.

On the second night, with her heart racing, Esther revealed everything: "Spare my people and me — we are sold to die." The king listened. Haman, who had built a gallows for Mordecai, was hanged on it. The death decree was reversed. People who were going to die celebrated in the streets.

Esther was not a warrior — she was a frightened young woman who chose to speak. God acts when someone risks their own silence for another's good. To this day the Jewish people celebrate Purim remembering: courage and prayer change history.

Reflection

Perhaps you are not a queen, but you occupy places — family, work, school — where your word can protect someone. Esther could have stayed quiet and lived comfortably. She chose to speak. Injustice thrives when everyone waits for someone else to react. Esther's fast reminds us: courage grows from deep roots. If today you can intercede for someone, do not underestimate what God will do with your voice.
