David and Goliath — Bible Story

1 Samuel 17

A young shepherd defeats a giant by trusting God.

Every day in the valley of Elah, the same terror repeated. Goliath — a giant in gleaming armor — shouted challenges and no one dared to come forward. Israel's army froze in fear. Among the tents, a young shepherd arrived bringing bread for his brothers. David heard the challenge and could not understand: "Who is this Philistine to defy the armies of the living God?"

Saul tried to dress him in heavy armor, but David could barely walk. "I tend sheep," he said. He knew smooth stones, a steady sling, cold nights in the field. His confidence was not in metal — it was in God. He took five stones and went down to the valley. Goliath laughed. David ran.

One stone. A spin of the sling. Silence. The giant fell. The battle belongs to the Lord — David knew that before he knew victory. The whole field erupted in shouts. A shepherd without a sword had defeated the invincible.

Israel celebrated, but David did not claim the glory. God chooses those the world underestimates — the youngest, the overlooked, the one who comes from the field and not from the palace. The victory belonged to the One who had been with him on dark nights.

Reflection

Giants still appear — fear, illness, injustice, voices that say "you are too small." David did not win because he was strong; he won because he knew the voice of the One who watched over him in the pasture. Perhaps your "sling" is prayer, patience, honesty. You do not need the armor others demand. God already saw your courage before the world applauded.
